Preface


The journey of KVG Dental College & Hospital, Sullia began with the first step on October 2nd 1991 by Late Dr. Kurunji Venkatramana Gowda, who is now referred to as Architect of Modern Sullia. He always dreamt of a health care facility catering to the needs of rural population, established in a rural setup. The Founder President set five golden rules as the foundation of Academy of Liberal Education®:


The foundation stone laying for the new building of KVG Dental College & Hospital was performed by former Chief minister late Mr. Bangarappa. The new building was inaugurated on 24.04.1993 by the then Chief Minister of Karnataka, Sri Veerappa Moily, Dr. R. K. Bali, the president of Dental Council of India inaugurated the clinical section while Late Dr. Mohandas Nayak, then President of IDA, Karnataka State inaugurated the special treatment room. The Prosthodontics department was inaugurated by the then Vice President of Dental Council of India, Dr. N. Sridhar Shetty.


The first batch of successful dentists completed their internship in 1996 which also marked the recognition of 40 student’s intake by DCI. Two years later on October 15th 1998, began a new era of post graduate training with starting of MDS courses in 3 departments namely Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery with an intake of total of 6 students. Subsequently the courses 3 Graduate Attributes 3 obtained the recognition of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru as well as Dental council of India. Further years witnessed constant upgradations in the Institution under the guidance of Dr. Renukaprasad K.V., the General Secretary of Academy of Liberal Education®. He left no stone unturned to make sure that the Institution gets modern equipments including latest dental chair, lecture halls, well stocked library, 24 hour power and water supply and necessary teaching faculty. Today we are privileged to have an intake of 100 undergraduate admissions, postgraduate course (MDS) in all specialities and 2 Postgraduate Diploma seats per year apart from intake for Dental Hygiene and Dental Technician course.


KVG Dental College & Hospital today is recognized nationally and internationally, completing 25 years of existence, thanks to the effort and farsightedness of founder Late Dr. Kurunji Venkatramana Gowda. Dr. K.V. Chidananda, the President of Academy of Liberal Education® Sullia has been leading the group of Institutions in the path of progress shown by his father taking great care in discipline in education and efficient delivery of health care services to the needy. The General Secretary Dr. Renukaprasad K. V. has successfully stepped into the shoes of his father. He has played a major role in the growth of KVG Dental College & Hospital taking special interest in all day to day activities and is responsible for taking the Institution to greater heights. He has made sure to provide access to state of the art dental treatment to the people of Sullia and surrounding rural areas akin to the motto of the Institution, “Live Lively, Serve Kindly”. Dr. Jyothi Renukaprasad, Director, AOLE, shares equal responsibilities with her husband in providing timely suggestions and guidance.


The torch of knowledge lighted 25 years ago by Dr. Kurunji Venkatramana Gowda is carried forward by his successors and supported by each and every one in KVG Dental College & Hospital. The trust governs sixteen Institutions which educates around 6,500 students in KVG Dental College & Hospital, KVG Medical College & Hospital, KVG Engineering College, KVG Ayurveda Medical College, KVG Law College, KVG International Public School, KVG Polytechnic, etc in a campus spanning over 42 acres. Though the founder is no more, the legacy continues and will shine like a bright star with the blessings of the Almighty.


The KVG Dental college & hospital, Kurunjibag, Sullia was established in the year 1991. The first batch of 40 students celebrated their graduation on August 1996 and began their carrier as dental professionals. The college was recognized by DCI and RGUHS with 100 admissions in the year 2001 and currently runs post graduate courses in 9 specialties. The college has progressed leaps and bounds in keeping quality dental education imbibed with proficiency and human value. This emporium has reached its zenith with completion of two decades in dental education.


The under graduate and postgraduate teaching programme are supported by an outstanding infrastructure which includes state of art, esthetically designed individual departments and well stocked library with lively shape and outlook.


The highly qualified faculties with rich experience of clinical and administrative skills are backbone for this esteemed institution. The management and faculty not only guide the students in dental education but also strive to develop student’s extracurricular activities and talents with sound morals, value.

At the completion of the undergraduate training programme the graduates shall be competent in the following.-

At the completion of the postgraduate training programme the graduates shall be competent in the following.-

  • Demonstrate understanding of basic sciences relevant to speciality;
  • Describe etiology, pathophysiology, principles of diagnosis and management of common problems within the speciality in adults and children;
  • Identify social, economic, environmental and emotional determinants in a given case and take them into account for planned treatment;
  • Recognise conditions that may be outside the area of speciality or competence and to refer them to the concerned specialist;
  • Update knowledge by self study and by attending courses, conferences and seminars pertaining to speciality;
  • Undertake audit, use information technology and carry out research in both basic and clinical with the aim of publishing or presenting the work at various scientific gathering;
  • Take a proper clinical history, examine the patient, perform essential diagnostic procedures and order relevant tests and interpret them to come to a reasonable diagnosis about the condition;
  • Acquire adequate skills and competence in performing various procedures as required in the speciality.
  • Adopt ethical principles in all aspects of practice and foster professional honesty and integrity;
  • . Deliver patient care irrespective of social status, caste, creed, or religion of the patient;
  • Develop communication skills, to explain various options available and obtain a true informed consent from the patient;
  • Provide leadership and get the best out of his team in a congenial working atmosphere;

MDS Specialities -

Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge is a branch of dental art and science pertaining to the restoration and maintenance of oral function, health, comfort and appearance by the replacement of mission or lost natural teeth and associated tissues either by fixed or removable artificial substitutes.

Periodotology is the science dealing with the health and diseases of the investing and supporting structures of the teeth and oral mucous membrane

Oral and Maxillofacial surgery deals with the diagnosis and surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries and defects of the human jaws and associated oral and facial structures.

Conservative dentistry deals with prevention and treatment of the diseases and injuries of the hard tissues and the pulp of the tooth and associated periapical lesions, alongwith restoration of those teeth to normal form function and aesthetics .

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics deals with prevention and correction of oral anomalies and malocclusion and the harmonising of the structures involved, so that the dental mechanisms function in a normal way.

Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology deals with the nature of oral diseases, their causes, processes and effects. It relates the clinical manifestation of oral diseases to the physiologic and anatomic changes associated with these diseases

Public Health Dentistry is the science and art of preventing and controlling dental diseases and promoting dental health through organised community efforts.

Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry deals with prevention and treatment of oral and dental ailments that may occur during childhood

Oral Medicine is a speciality of dentistry concerned with the basic diagnostic procedures and techniques useful in recognising the diseases of the oral tissues of local and constitutional origin and their medical management

Radiology is a science dealing with x-rays and their uses in diagnosis and treatment of diseases in relation to orofacial diseases.
